Friday, January 16, 2009 KOREA TAEKWONDO ASSOCIATION, CERTIFIED STANDARDS OF ELECTRONIC HOGU SYSTEM

Korea Taekwondo Association (Chairman Jun Pyo Hong, KTA) has announced their certified standards for electronic hogu system. Increased judging standards, impact measurement and accuracy, differentiate from valid and invalid kicks, and system control functions.

The details are below.

Impact, Accuracy, and Consistency

5 identical test kicks to each of the 28 scoring areas on the hogu. 10 more test kicks to the same areas with doubled impact. This experiment will be repeated twice. Acceptable margin of error for 5 kick test is +/- 3 (or an average deviation of 6%), and for the 10 kick test with doubled impact will require margin of error +/- 6 (or an average deviation of 12%).

Differentiating Valid and Invalid Kicks

Until now, this area created the most controversy during matches using electronic hogu system. For this reason, rather than a test, KTA will evaluate it through exhibition games testing different electronic hogu systems.

System Operation and Efficiency

KTA will require a system that can detect malfunctions or system crashes that can occur during matches. This also will be evaluated through the exhibition games. The current price is too expensive; therefore an efficient system with better pricing will be favoured. In addition to the preparatory stage, total time from preparation time to the end of match will be evaluated.

KTA plans to put information about the electronic hogu on their homepage on the 10th. Companies that want to participate in the testing can apply from the 10th. Evaluation will last till February 28th and results will be released on March 15th.
